A study in reimagining the ‘traditional’ Mechanical Circulatory Support MCS controllers to create a more intuitive, patient-focused device for users of Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) and Total Artificial Hearts (TAHs). Based on patient insights, and medical professionals experience, we created a next-generation controller concept to drive discussion and promote a range of innovative ideas. Our primary goal was to create a human-centered design that fostered a personal connection with patients and caregivers.

Traditional controllers often feel clinical and unengaging, with anxiety-inducing alarms and unclear displays. Hydrix addressed these issues with innovative ideas inlcuding:
- Circular Touchscreen Interface to represent continuous blood flow, creating a more approachable and intuitive design.
- System Status Indicator: Instantly communicates system health, offering reassurance with calm visuals and adaptive alerts.
- Alarm Guidance: Explains alerts with step-by-step instructions or videos to reduce anxiety.
- First Responder Mode: Provides critical, accessible information during emergencies.
- Daily Integration: Seamlessly connects to smart devices for real-time feedback and activity suggestions.
The redesigned controller improves patient experience with intuitive controls, engaging displays, and empathetic communication. It also facilitates emergency care by equipping first responders with accessible, critical information.

Hydrix’s vision sets a new standard for MCS controllers by blending advanced technology with empathy. This next-generation device not only sustains life but enriches it, redefining the relationship between medical devices and their users.
